
Despite predictions that the recession would be focused on the South East and the middle classes, so far the highest growth in unemployment is in the places that already had high levels of worklessness, with the North, Midlands and South Wales bearing the brunt. This fringe event will look at how cities can respond to rising unemployment and worklessness. What can the government, cities and employers do, in the short and longer term, to manage the impact of unemployment on people and places? And what lessons can be learned from employer-led regeneration programmes about working with communities?
